The Geneva Motor Show in March 1963 marked the debut of a remarkable new Mercedes-Benz model: the 230 SL. With this vehicle, Daimler-Benz introduced a sports car designed to replace two highly successful predecessors at once – the 190 SL and the legendary 300 SL.
The newcomer inherited a challenging legacy, as both predecessors had enjoyed great popularity and commercial success. What made this task even more demanding was the fact that, despite their visual similarities, the two models represented fundamentally different vehicle concepts.
Mercedes-Benz chose a balanced approach with the new model. Internally designated W 113, the 230 SL combined sporty performance with comfort and outstanding driving safety, creating an elegant two-seater ideal for long-distance touring.
