The Euro Souvenir Banknote produces its zero-euro notes exclusively in cooperation with the same security printing company that manufactures genuine euro banknotes. As a result, these collector’s notes feature many of the characteristics of real currency, including watermarks, copper security strips, Simultouch technology, holograms, see-through registration marks, security backgrounds, fluorescent invisible ink, and an individual serial number.
However, despite these authentic security features, the zero-euro note cannot be mistaken for legal tender.
This year, a truly special vehicle takes center stage on the limited-edition zero-euro note: the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL. Featured on the exclusive print, it pays tribute to one of the most celebrated icons in automotive history.
The Mercedes-Benz 230 SL was the world’s first sports car to feature a rigid passenger cell combined with crumple zones. Its most distinctive characteristic was the exceptionally strong, inward-curved removable hardtop. This unique roof design soon earned the model its famous nickname, “Pagoda,” as its silhouette resembled the roofs of traditional Asian temples.
Powered by a six-cylinder engine, the 230 SL generated 150 hp (110 kW) from a displacement of 2,306 cm³. Delivering its maximum power at 5,500 rpm, the vehicle achieved a top speed of up to 200 km/h. The model was produced between 1963 and 1967, with a total of 19,831 vehicles built.
