In July 1971 the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG caused a sensation at the 24-hour race in Spa when it scooped victory in its class and second place overall. The car became a legend, bringing AMG instant fame around the world. A large measure of the success was due to the drivers Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickedanz.
